This post is about Critical thinking. Why would I want to write about it now? Well, I promise it will connect and make sense.
As a psychologist specializing in the world of work, we have been writing and talking about skills needed in the future world of work.
One of them is Critical Thinking.
I can't think of a better time than this to understand the importance of this skill.
In a world where information is disseminated subjectively and instantly - where images without context are posted and distributed, where influencers on Instagram are more credible than experts and intellectuals that have spent their adult lives researching issues and geopolitical situations. Where subjective thought leaders have more followers than objective scientists. This is a real time opportunity to discuss the importance of CRITICAL THOUGHT.
Enter October 7th, 2023. The massacre of over 1500 Israeli civilians by the terrorist organization Hamas. Besides the war that has erupted and the looming danger of a 3rd World War - social media is being bombarded by tons of posts - Israeli posts, Pro-Palestinan posts - pro and against the issues at hand. I have been speaking to many Jewish friends and colleagues all over the world who have all shared with me how scared and alone they feel dealing with the surge of anti-semitic and anti-Israeli sentiment.
Regular communities, Ivy League universities, places of work - have become a hotbed for the dissemination of false news. The war of narratives, of gory pictures and hatred overlooks the facts.
Disclosure: I am Israeli, to me - we are fighting for our existence. We are at war with a terrorist organization that has taken its people and our people hostage. I will not go on to describe their acts against humanity taken on a lazy Saturday morning. Life as I know it has changed forever. But don't take my word for it, do the research and think critically. How? I've broken it down.
